MSG Detachment Reykjavik was part of Company G, MSG Battalion. It started out in Company A, then joined Subunit Company A, until A and G formally split in 1979.

Sadly they phased out the MSG program in Reykjavik. There was always a big conflict with the Icelandic government about uniformed Marines in a small, peaceful country of only 300 k population. Virtually all the Marines had the cutest girls in Reykjavik, often marrying them—or getting them pregnant. They flocked to the house every night. This created problems with the neighbors, the ambassador, and local Communist newspapers. I suspect that was another reason they terminated the program.
One of the Marines punched out the embassy cryptologist in a fight over a girl. Broke his nose. I pulled them apart. If wouldn’t have been an issue if it was two Marines but the embassy guy— who provoked the fight—reported the incident to the ambassador. The Marine colonel in charge of all European Marines flew up from Frankfurt for the court martial. I was the lone witness and testified favorably for the Marine but to no avail. No reduction in rank, but he lost his position—and his girlfriend—and was sent back to the swamps of Lejeune. There was always some juicy scandal going on at the embassy that didn’t involve Marines. I imagine you were aware of a few in Panama and Brasil as well.
I was assigned to Rio as assistant financial attaché with US Treasury and then transferred to Brasilia for a short time in early 70’s while the city was still under construction. When they reduced embassy staff I left the government for a few years and later worked in Lima and Managua with US/Aid.
