February 22, 1958: Egypt and Syria united to form a new state, the United Arab Republic (UAR).
February 25, 1958: The United States recognized the UAR (Capital was established in Cairo)
- American Embassy in Damascus was reclassified as a Consulate General. Syria seceded from the Union in 1961;
- Egypt continued to be known officially as the “United Arab Republic” until 1971.
April 26, 1922: Diplomatic relations between US & Egypt were established
June 6, 1967: The United Arab Republic severed diplomatic relations with the United States (Wikipedia: Arab-Israeli War.)
June 7, 1967: A U.S. Interests Section was established in the Spanish Embassy in Cairo
February 28, 1974: Resume diplomatic relations.

A U. S. Interests Section was established in the Spanish Embassy on Jun 7, 1967. Principal Officers were: Donald C. Bergus, Sep 1967 - Feb 1972; Joseph N. Greene Jr. , Feb 1972 - Jul 1973, and Herman Eilts, Nov 1973 - Feb 1974.
